This hike belongs to one of Hawaii’s oldest islands: Kauai. Located at the top of the Hawaiian archipelago, Kauai is well-known for its scenery and greenery. The journey to Secret falls involves a little more than parking at a trail head and slipping on hiking boots. Rather, this adventure begins on the water at the head of the Wailua River. Travelers are able to rent kayaks there and be accompanied by an experienced guide.
Kayaking up the bends of the Wailua River, with lush green hills on either side, the river gradually tapers off until navigating the river requires extensive steering to avoid trees, bushes, logs, and hanging vines. Finally, the kayaks are dragged up the river bank and secured at the head of the trail.
The trail is muddy and littered with roots and rocks. After a rainstorm the trail can be particularly muddy and slippery. The trail is completely embedded in rain forest with all of its exotic sounds and smells. After hiking along a small valley following the river, the trail ends at Secret Falls.
There is a beautiful open area surrounding the waterfall. There are many places to sit and enjoy it. Swimming is also permitted. If you ever find yourself on Kauai, this hike is highly recommended!
