An entire city, underground? That’s crazy, right? Well… hold on just a minute, we’ve got some pretty interesting information to share with you today. Through out the many years of human history, many great and amazing cities have been constructed. From the beautiful architecture of Rome, to the towering skyscrapers of New York, cities have been among some of the most spectacular achievements of mankind.

Each city has its own unique feel to it, it’s own special atmosphere, but did you know that there have even been cities built underground? Don’t believe me, check out the list below to learn about some of these amazing subterranean marvels.

1 – Derinkuyu, Turkey

Perhaps the greatest of any city found on this list, is that of Derinkuyu in Turkey. The entirety of Derinkuyu reaches around 200 feet into the earths surface, and could house up to 20,000 thousand people! To put that into perspective that is about 18 stories deep, and could house a small city like Payson, UT.

The craziest part about this is that it was discovered by a man that was re-modeling his home. When he broke down one of the walls, he found a cave behind it and quickly discovered that it could not be explored by one man alone. Check out the video below to learn more about this awesome city.

2 – Naours – France

Naours, FranceNaours, France

In Northern France, there lies a small, unassuming town called Naours. While the town itself is quite nice, it also holds a pretty epic secret. Underneath the modern city lies around 2 miles of tunnels with over 300 separate rooms! These tunnels have been around for quite some time and have been used for protection by many. At its fullest, the small underground city could house around 3,000 people, almost 3 times the population of modern Naours! If you are interested in learning more, the video below provides some more interesting details.

3 – Dixia Cheng, China

While this city isn’t as old as the others on this list, it definitely has its own merits. This city, otherwise known as “the Underground City” was built by the Chinese in the 60’s and 70’s due to the nuclear threat. The underground city was build to house nearly one-million people, and if that is not enough for you, they also had restaurants, a skating rink, and even a 1,000 seat theater. The city itself was never actually used, but it’s many tunnels are underneath the city of Beijing to this day. For this city I was able to find the best video so far, check it out!

4 – Petra, Jordan

This city, while a much different style, is no less magnificent. This city is different in that all of the buildings are not connected through underground tunnels. They are, however, carved into canyon walls, thus making them underground. There is a lot to be said about this amazing city, so instead of writing it all, I’m going to let you watch the video below.
