If Felix Baumgartner doesn’t ring a bell, you might remember him from 2012 when he broke the world record for skydiving by riding a balloon up to space. Ya, that guy. Did you know that in doing so he became the first human to break the speed of sound outside of a vehicle? And that’s not all…

Felix had to jump from a height of over 22.5 miles above the earth. That is high enough in the atmosphere that it is practically space, and NASA had to design a special suit for him. For some perspective, commercial airliners normally cruise around roughly 5.5 miles off the ground.

Speaking of commercial airliners, they also fly at a speed of Mach 0.8, or 80% the speed of sound. Felix, when he jumped, reached Mach 1.25, which is well over the speed of sound. Even with speeds like that, he was free-falling (which means no parachuting yet) for 4 minutes and 19 seconds.
